Chiropractors Take a Natural Approach to Health

Chiropractic has been around for over 100 years. Chiropractic was started by a man by the name of Daniel Palmer in the 1890s. He performed the first chiropractic treatment on a man named Harvey Lillard that was having a hearing problem. After the treatment, Harvey’s hearing was restored and chiropractic was born.

Today chiropractic is the largest, drug-less, healthcare profession in the world. Many people visit chiropractors to receive natural treatment for a variety of different conditions. Chiropractic takes a holistic approach to health with an emphasis on the spine and musculoskeletal system of the body.

Chiropractors correct misaligned joints of the spine and other joints in the body. When the spine becomes misaligned, it can cause pressure on nerves. The medical term for this condition is called subluxation. The muscles and ligaments of the spine can also become involved as they are stretched or irritated from the misalignment.

Chiropractors correct these misaligned joints by performing specific adjustments using their hands or special instruments. Chiropractors perform a variety of different techniques to accomplish this. By correcting the misalignment, the pressure is taken off of the nerve and function is restored.

Pressure on the nerves can cause problems in other areas of the body, not just the spine. The nervous system or nerves of the body control every other system in the body. When there is pressure on nerves, this can result in a lack of communication from the brain to the body. This can result in dysfunction in the body. An example of this could be a misalignment in the spine causing pressure on a nerve that controls the digestive system. The result would be having digestive problems.

There are several things that can cause misaligned joints of the spine. These can include the birthing process, sporting injuries, falls, improper lifting or car accidents just to name a few. It is important to maintain good posture and avoid trauma to the spine to help avoid misaligned joints in the spine or other joints in the body.

Some of the main conditions that chiropractors help people with include headaches, neck pain, back pain and numbness or pain in the arms or legs. These types of symptoms are often caused from pressure on nerves.

Many chiropractors incorporate physical therapy in addition to chiropractic treatments. The chiropractic treatments focus on correcting the misaligned joints. The therapies work to help muscles or ligaments that are also injured because of the misaligned joints. Chiropractic and physical therapy work well together helping to restore function to the body.
