The Nation’s Health

They have always said “If it works don’t fix it.” An old wives’ tale about cooks in the kitchen like “Too many cooks spoil the broth.” Both of these enduring catch phrases have been around for decades and yet there is an awful a lot of truth behind each one. Today, when we remember these phrases we so often think of a time when the food we ate actually was beneficial. Now days so much of our food on grocery shelves, butcher shops and meat and fish counters have all been tampered with in some form or another. Many of us now have come to a realization that for over 25 years our own government and corporate America in collusion together deceived the American public particularly with the food we eat every day. Unbeknownst to the public we have been and are human guinea pigs to the food conglomerates, our own government, and the scientific and pharmaceutical community.

Right under our noses we have been literally forced into making unhealthy food choices because the food we buy is riddled with alterations that have kept corporate America’s profits soaring. We have to understand that there are two essential ingredients to life, the macronutrients and the micronutrients. In further explanation, macronutrients are defined as a class of chemical compounds which humans consume in the largest quantities that provide man with the bulk of their energy. These include healthy fats, carbohydrates, and protein. Micronutrients include vitamins and minerals which man needs smaller amounts. The media has had a hand in influencing the general public that the processed food we eat and pharmaceuticals we take for our many ills and pains are our best options. The real truth for our overall health and vitality lies in non processed, non Genetically Modified food and vitamins that add a balance to our diet. With the media as an accomplice in a deceptive cover up focusing attention that the GMO food we eat and the prescriptions we take outweigh the benefits of the natural food and vitamins we really should be eating and taking.

A collusion between the medical field, the pharmaceutical industry, Monsanto and our government all have had a hand in deceiving the public about the food we really are eating. We are just beginning to understand how important natural healthy food and vitamins really are. And yet the FDA has been very reluctant to support the benefits of non GMO food and vitamins when it comes to ones health. As it stands today when we think of natural cures for so many illnesses the FDA throws a veil of secrecy over the facts of medical cures. The reason is money. Natural cures are not patentable, which means the FDA and Big Pharma drug companies won’t and can’t make money from them.

It is vitamins and minerals that run man’s biochemical processes. An example of the health benefits of vitamins in regards to Depression is Vitamin C and folate. These create dopamine not an anti-depressant drug like Zoloft and Wellbutrin that are so often advertised on TV. Vitamins and minerals fill the very important nutritional gap that makes all of our biochemical reactions run smoothly. So often the media is responsible for the addiction so many Americans have with the many available drugs for one ill or another. Millions of Americans that take prescriptions and over the counter meds are not even aware that these meds steal the vital nutrients the body needs. In too many cases if one has been diagnosed with a medical condition it is most likely due to a deficiency of one ore more micronutrient.

Questions have to be asked especially when we realize that Americans get sick more often than Europeans and people in other industrialized countries. Since the mid-1990s, the number of Americans suffering from chronic diseases, such as heart disease, asthma, cancer, and diabetes, has more than doubled. America’s infant mortality has increased and Americans life span has plunged. Another question arises why is this happening? What has changed over the last two decades that could possibly explain this huge downward spiral in the health of our nation?

To answer these most discerning questions we really have to focus on the food we have been and continually are eating. The industrialization of our food as well as the scientific community realizing population growth started with what we should say as tinkering with our food supply. This tinkering is essentially to modify grain seeds, soy, fish, and today meat all for the purpose to provide bigger more abundant food sources. In the process of modifying food sources they took genes form one species and spliced it into the DNA of other species creating new organism that did not exist in nature. These organisms are now part of the majority of the food we actually are eating right now. It is these crops that have been genetically engineered to produce their own pesticides and withstand large doses of herbicides all with the promise that they would increase crop yields and profits. Since the early 1990’s these Genetically Modified Organisms have been the dominate source of all our food.

We have to realize that the industrialization of our food has been the source of so much of our nations ill health. When we look back just fifty years ago there was no way near the enormity of the medical conditions affecting so many millions of Americas that we have today. The industrialization of our food has been another source of contamination that has erupted all across the country. The salmonella outbreak found in peanut butter, the contamination of Blue Bell Ice Cream, to the Mad Cow scare in Great Britain and even here in the United States all are contributing factors that have made us realize that many of our sources of food as unsafe and driven up the costs. Yet even today another threat to our food comes from Avain Flu which is now threatening Hormel food Industry. The lack of sanitation, the mass production of poultry, pork and beef with injected antibiotics have made our sources of food more susceptible to any airborne disease and have made humans more at risk of developing illness.

In all when we really think about it the food we have been eating and the food that is already in your refrigerator is in all probability poisoning us all in the name of corporate profits and political power. Take a closer look at Monsanto. With a 90% market share, it dominates the GMO industry. The real issue is that farmers who purchase Monsanto’s patented GMO seeds have to sign a contract. This agreement forbids farmers from keeping any new seed produced by the crop for the following year, or even saving leftover seeds. In other words, farmers must agree to use the seeds for one-time only. This basically ensures a perpetual stream of cash flow for the company because farmers will have to buy new seeds every year. It is a win-win situation for the corporate farmers and biotech firms. The farmers get bigger crops that can grow in any conditions. The biotech firms make money selling their seeds. Now look at the results. All across the United States of the food we have been and are eating does not paint a pretty picture to be sure. More Americans are succumbing too early to the many effects of the GMO food that we consume such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, cancer and so many other aliments and illness.

The mind frame today of so many corporations profits continue to outweigh the health and safety of the consumer. it is as though we really haven’t come that far away from the ole stock yards of South Chicago of the 19th and 20th century. But the bright spot is the fact that back then the individual family farmer with locally grown produce provided a healthy alternative to the industrial corporate farms we have today. We may never go back to those days of the local family farm but we would be wise to seek alternatives to the GMO food sources we so readily see in our neighborhood grocery store. We also have to exert a certain amount of responsibility to ourselves, our families, and our environment by consuming the right balance of nutrition without the gluttony we see so much of today. The nations health depends on the health and vitality of all it’s citizens.
