How to Accessorize a Saree for Different Occasions

This may be an oft-repeated cliche statement but a saree is indeed that versatile garment that can be worn on a myriad of occasions. From festive family get-togethers to a presentation at work, a saree can make that head-turning style statement anywhere, if worn and styled the right way.

Most of us typically pick the colour, design, texture, material and method of draping the saree on the basis of the event. However, an equally important aspect that you must pay attention to is the way you style your saree with suitable accessories.

Here are a few pointers that will help you accessorize your saree the right way for different occasions:

1. Festive occasions like Diwali, Weddings and Engagements

Grand festivities call for grandeur in your dressing. On these occasions, you could choose to go as colourful and sparkly with your whole saree look as you like. Pair your expensive designer sarees with heavy ethnic jewellery to up the ante. However, do make sure that you do not make this silly faux pas that most women make – mixing together golden coloured jewellery with silver-work saree and vice versa. The two different shimmers of gold and silver can kill your overall look, so ensure that the sheen from your jewellery and saree are of the same colour. These occasions are also when you would be participating in various events, so do buy some ethnic shoes with minimal or no heels, based on your comfort level. Last but not the least, a beautiful ethnic handbag and an embellished bindi will complete your diva look perfectly.

2. At the workplace

Sarees at the workplace can look ultra-chic if you keep your overall look minimalistic. It is best to avoid sarees with gold or silver or any kind of shimmer or shine altogether. Complement your saree with some high heels to give yourself height and confidence at work. Carry a well-made, professional-looking bag and wear a muted colour watch on your non-dominant hand (preferably in grey). To top off your look, adorn yourself with a string of pearls around your neck and voilà, you are ready with a look that’s as beautiful as your work!

3. Casual family dinners

Whether you are making an impression on your in-laws or presenting a well put-together look to your cousins, make sure you style your saree the right way. Go for fine jewellery without overdoing it – for example, three to four elegant bangles, intricate earrings and a delicate ethnic necklace will look apt for such an occasion. To jazz up your style in an interesting way, you could also wear dainty ethnic anklets to enchant everyone with its sweet, mellifluous sound. Finally, complete your look with a stylish clutch, a simple bindi and a pair of wedges.
