Hail St George!

April 23, St. George’s Day, the patron saint of England.

Some curiosity?

Many British people if asked: “Who is the patron saint of England?”, can not answer… and for many of them the day of its celebration is… just like any other day! But for many, it is still mandatory to celebrate on April 23 as an important day.

All the towns are colored in white and red and every corner echoes the name of their beloved nation in the world.

Proud soldier, St. George died for his beliefs, and the strongest image that the English have in their imagination is their patron carrying on a battle, weary and tired, against a huge dragon, finally defeating him by the sign of the cross.

This gave origin to the great stimulus back in the British era, to become Christians.

The red rose became, in April, the national flower, and the English are content to show their pride.

It ‘s fun to live in London during this day.

The British capital is full of life, with various events that turn into a huge open-air fair, activities for children, sweets fairs, theaters, often improvised and dedicated to culinary topics, parades through the streets of the city.

Events are certainly not limited to the 23rd of April, but in the days preceding and following the date of recurrence.

Those looking for peaceful settings, will not benefit from visiting London these days, but those who love to visit a city enjoying close its traditions will have… bread for their teeth.

This year, the musical notes of the Locrian Ensemble will ring in the church of St Martin in the Fields, Trafalgar Square, at 19.30 on April 23, with music compositions by Offenbach, Puccini, Handel and many others.

Near the concert visitors will not fail to try the specialty cocktails, prepared for the Feast by the Donovan Bar. Do not miss the Queen’s English, with a base of gin mixed with apple juice, a splash of lemon and fresh strawberries, or Green and Pleasant, made with grapes, basil and lemon.

For dinner, “The Albemarle” offers a special menu of St. George: two or three courses, organized by Chef Lee Streeton which revisit the most famous and classic English dishes, with proposals affordable and very elegant.

And… to digest… you should not miss the opportunity to have a round of navigation on the Thames, to explore the view from the London River.

The British love this day, and try to “paint” London with the colors of the party, perhaps putting away a little of their renowned “classy” habits that distinguish them, to indulge in the arms of spontaneity and freshness, thanks to the spring, warming the cold winter sun.

London is cozy and noisy these days and receives its visitors… with open arms.
