The land of thunder dragon, known to the Bhutanese as Drukyul is the most peaceful nation on earth. With less than the total population of 700,000, People of Bhutan are the most happiest people you can find on earth. In the year 2008, Bhutan celebrated 100 years of monarchy with the coronation of the fifth King, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk, becoming the world’s youngest monarch.

This tiny nation’s citizens are so fortunate to have the King who is far sighted and benevolent. The first general election was held in 2008 to bring about democracy in the country. On 17th December 2005, the fourth king of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuk, announced his abdication from the throne in favor of his the then Crown Prince son. Even more significant was, when the fourth King declared that Bhutan would become a democracy and the general election would be held in 2008. Even as his citizens begged him to reconsider, he was steadfast about his decision, which culminated to the transition from Constitutional Monarchy to the youngest democracy.

Today Bhutan is the world’s youngest democracy with the government headed by the first Prime Minister of Bhutan Lyonchen Jigme Yoezer Thinley with the council of ministers and some of the youngest member of parliament.

With the change of the government system in Bhutan, the country has started its development philosophy, Gross National happiness, widely known as GNH. Bhutan has now the schools and health institutions name after its philosophy.

Several developmental projects like generating hydro power with the goal of achieving 10,000 mega watts by 2020 have been started. Many more job opportunities for the young and old have been created in this few years.

Transportation system in the country has been modernized and road safety measures have been considered the most important by the Royal Government of Bhutan. various agencies and Non- Governmental Organization (NGO) have come up to tackle the needs of the emergencies.

Now in the coming few months, Bhutan will witness yet another historical events when the King of Bhutan, Jigmhesar Namgyal Wangchuck would wed Ashi Jetsuen Pema, which will bring hope to the people Bhutan to be the most happiest country.
