The small dogs of the Corgi breed were firstly raised to help farmers in herding sheep and other domestic animals. The two specific varieties of dogs of the corgi breed have their origins in Wales. Known under the names of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, these dogs are very popular as pets. One of the most famous people who owns this great breed of dog is Queen Elizabeth II who has had them for many years. People believe that the name of the breed originates from the Welsh words Cor ci, which means dwarf dog.

The main purpose behind the breeding of the Corgi dog was to have a dog that could herd the livestock successfully. These dogs were leading the animals within the farm by nipping them on their heels. Due to the fact that the Corgi was so low to the ground the dogs would very rarely be kicked by the agitated animals. Few other kinds of dogs but Corgi can be used to herd geese.

The Corgi is incredibly strong for its size as well as being agile and very fast. Although they are no longer used to herd animals they are very protective over children. The dogs of the Corgi breed are also fearless and will protect their family against any threat. They are determined dogs, sometimes even obstinate, but you can use these traits in your benefit if you train them properly. They have the qualities of family pets, as they are affectionate and rarely overexcited, very good companions for both children and elderly people.

You may find them quite gluttonous, especially considering their size, so be careful not to overfeeding them. Although there are two very similar types of corgi, there are distinctive differences between them. The Pembroke corgi is smaller and sturdier being lower to the ground. The higher body and the longer tail make the Cardigan Corgi the largest variety of the breed. Due to their different bone structure, the Cardigan Corgi is also longer than the Pembroke Corgi variety of dogs.

The coats of the dogs of the Corgi breed are double, the protective, external layer is dense and harsh and the lower layer is softer and keeps them warm. The corgi’s head on both types is very fox like, and will often have white markings on their muzzles. The ears of these dogs are erect and often pricked allowing them quite a fine hearing. Both of the Corgi breeds are very healthy dogs that live for many years; and they have very few hereditary health problems.

The average life span of these dogs is between 12 and 15 years, if they are provided with good diet and regular exercises. Their short legs still need a good amount of exercise every day, because this way they will not get bored and will keep their health. They are obedient, agile and eager to learn tricks and practice their skills. They will easily learn everything you are teaching them, just to please you and to show every day what they have learned.
