To Kill a Mockingbird Chapter Summary – Chapter 1

Setting:

In chapter 1, Scout Finch, the six-year-old girl narrator of To Kill a Mockingbird, lives during the 1930’s near downtown in Maycomb, a small Alabama town, with her father Atticus, brother Jem, and cook Calpurnia. Atticus is a local lawyer in the town and is the father of Scout and Jem. Jem is the Scout’s older brother. Calpurnia is the Finch household cook who lives close to downtown. People in the Maycomb town relates to one another either by marriage or by blood. They are a closely related community.

Introduction:

The story begins at the start of summer. The character named Scout is only six and her brother is ten when they find a scrawny boy hiding in the turnip greens of their neighbor next door. Dill becomes an instant friend to both Scout and Jem as he caught the interests of the two by revealing that he had seen “Dracula” already, which gives him immediate credibility. As they spend summer playing their favorite games together, they become bored and determine to make their reclusive neighbor, Boo Radley, come out of the house.

Scout, Jem, and Dill’s Conflict, Curiosity, and Fear of Boo Radley:

The supposedly fun goal of trying to get Boo Radley to leave his house became an obsession for the three — Dill, Scout, and Jem. They focus their creativity and fun skills to make Boo Radley come out of the house. Boo lives in the same street where Scout and Jem live. There is a legendary story that Boo never comes out of his house and that all the mysterious events, which include the tiniest crimes in town, are his making. Nobody dares to pass by his house alone after dark. Jem and Dill had an amazingly fun idea. They agreed to run towards Boo’s house, touch the house, and then ran back. Dill’s first attempt was a success. The characters were happy to still be alive. Jem receiving a lot of teasing from Dill and she spent much time thinking about the act.
