Junk Food and Its Impact on Human Health

Junk food has become ever so popular in our society especially after the introduction of fast food restaurants such as Burger King and McDonalds. But what exactly is junk food? How can we define it? Junk food is generally food which contains a high abundant of fats (most likely saturated fat) and high amounts of salt. This food generally includes foods such as hot dogs, hamburgers, potato chip, soft drinks and so on. It is associated with many health problems including the heart, the liver and the kidneys as well as cardiovascular problems.

When it comes to dieting, it is all to do with moderation. If you constantly eat this food, it will be inevitable that you will get fat or even obese. Constantly eating junk food, your body will slowly begin to decline in the sense that your metabolism slows down; you’ll slowly secrete less hormones and so on. This is why many fat or obese women are unable to have periods as their menstrual cycle changes and develop into other problems.

The health risks associated with this food have cost millions of dollar to Government for preventing this trend, for research and so on. One of the most common side effects of eating junk food is cardiovascular and heart health. This is because your blood pressure will increase which consequently has a negative effect on your heart. Another risk associated to heart health is atherosclerosis which is basically the clogging of the arteries; this can consequently cause heart attacks and result in death.

Constantly eating junk food may result in other health problems such as diabetes. There are two types of diabetes- type 1 and type 2. Type 1 is when you get it due to hereditary reasons and type 2 is generally when you get diabetes due to bad habits such as eating junk food. Type 2 diabetes is generally reversible. So, exercising and eating healthy food again will work wonders for you.

Junk food contains a lot of salt especially fries and burgers. Salt is known to increase blood pressure and put added strain on your kidneys. People who are obese and over weight have more chance of developing kidney failure and may be in need of dialysis treatment.

It contains a lot of sugar especially crisps, soft drinks and biscuits. These types of food are known to cause tooth decay as well as being harsh on the stomach and also the blood. Sugar is effectively a poison to your body. Over time, your body will begin to decline and it will cause various health issues. Another health issue not picked on is the increase of bad cholesterol. This will put strain on the heart and is associated with heart attacks.

Although there are many health issues raised from eating junk food, you have to realize that you can eat it in moderation. Learn to look after yourself and you will inevitably be looking after your body- your organs, your skin, your immune system. Think twice before eating junk food continuously.

In today’s society, many people are self-conscious and people have been known to be clinically depressed just from eating junk food. The reason for this is because you’re not obtaining enough vitamins and your body is not producing enough serotonin to feel good.
