Oda might’ve hinted at who the stronger one between Shanks and Mihawk is.

Bonney gets more interesting the more fans find out about her and the Kuma flashback has certainly warmed fans up to her quite a lot. Bonney’s story is also very intriguing and, it is fair to say that she has a decent shot at becoming the next Straw Hat. At the very least, she certainly checks all the boxes.

Bonney’s Past

Bonney is somewhat of a tragic character and has been for the vast majority of her life. However, tragedy doesn’t define her as it does Kuma. Bonney might be tragic but, at the same time, she is also full of hope and represents the ideas of Kuma’s hopes for freedom and a better world. Bonney was born after Ginny was kidnapped by the Celestial Dragons and forced to marry one of them. Ginny bore Bonney out of this forced marriage and ended up dying after she contracted the Sapphire Scale Disease. This disease was quite deadly and ended up consuming her life, however, she spent the last breaths she had after being discarded by the Celestial Dragons in an attempt to get to do the Sorbet Kingdom one last time and, at the same time, protect her baby.

Kuma, who loved Ginny and was also her childhood best friend, arrived on the Sorbet Kingdom shortly after her death and realized that he was too late. At this point, Kuma decided to raise Bonney by himself as his very own daughter. Kuma was a father to her like no one could ever have been, despite not having a blood connection with her, which, once again, highlights the very important theme that family isn’t defined by blood. Kuma taught Bonney the best he could and gave her everything that he possibly could.

Bonney’s Dream And Kuma’s Sad Fate

Continuing his duties as a parent as a revolutionary, Kuma decided to do what he could, however, all things changed when was revealed that Bonney had contracted the Sapphire Scale as well. This disease would eventually consume her life if she was out in any source of natural light, be it the sun or moon. Even if she wasn’t allowed in natural light, she would still die by her 10th birthday, and because of that, Kuma set out on the quest to find a cure for her, even going as far as to leave his post as a leading commander of the Revolutionary Army. Kuma went from place to place in search of a cure and couldn’t find one, and when he had lost all hope and given into despair, he found out about Vegapunk.

Heading to Egghead with Bonney, Kuma finally realized that she could essentially be cured of her illness. However, in return, Kuma would have to give his body up as the basis for the cyborg cloning project. Kuma would then form the basis of the Pacifista and, in return, Bonney would have her disease cured.

One Piece: The Secret Behind Zoro’s Left Eye, Explained

Zoro’s left eye could reveal his next power up in One Piece.

From a very young age, Bonney was quite a gleeful child. She was absolutely not afraid to stand up to those who would laugh at her and, it was clear that she was an exuberant figure, full of hopes and dreams. Bonney, due to being indoors for the vast majority of her life, had hopes and dreams for exploring the entire world. Bonney found herself digging into books, looking at various places where she could visit and, given how fascinating the world of One Piece is, she had an entire list of places she would like to go to. In fact, when Kuma would go out, he would come back with a list of places to add to their incredible list.

Bonney wanted to visit the heights of the Sky Islands and the depths of Fishman Island. She wanted to travel across the entire world and, the sad reality was that she absolutely couldn’t, that is, until she was cured.

Bonney eventually secured a cure from Vegapunk, however, this came at the cost of her only living parent, because Saturn’s plans would see to it that Kuma lose his humanity and be turned into a mindless robot. Bonney’s dream of exploring the entire world with her father shattered and that is why she set out on a quest to become a pirate, and, potentially, secure a cure for her father, just as he had done for her when she was a child.

Could Bonney Become A Straw Hat?

The Straw Hat Pirates are not complete and, at the beginning of his story, Luffy clearly mentions that he needs 10 people on his crew. Currently, Luffy has nine subordinates and that means there is room for one more or, potentially more than just 10. As for Bonney, she certainly fits the billing of a Straw Hat. Bonney’s past has made the fans love her immensely and, knowing that she is connected to Kuma makes it even more special. Bonney dreams of visiting every single place in the entire world and given that she has an entire book filled with places that she would want to visit, it would be cool for Oda to actually show her visiting these places.

Ideally, Bonney would have liked for Kuma to show her around, however, fans know that the tragic faith that Kuma suffered means that he is not going to be able to do that for his daughter. He has already done enough and that is where the warrior of liberation, Nika, comes in. Both Kuma and Bonney are firm believers in Nika and, both of them believe that he will one day come and rescue them. This responsibility is paramount and Luffy will have to step it up and try to save both Kuma and Bonney. It must be said, however, that saving Kuma is more difficult than saving Bonney and, at the very least, Luffy will have to take Bonney with him.

The dreams that Kuma could not show him, could end up being fulfilled by Luffy and, given that Bonney herself believes in Nika, she certainly would want to aid in the journey of liberating the world, just like her father once did.

As for what role Bonney could fulfill as a member of the Straw Hat Pirates, fans need not think too much about it. Oda can always invent new roles on the spot, just as he did with Jinbe. The matter of the fact is that Bonney is a perfect fit for the Straw Hat Pirates, just like many other characters, and it remains to be seen what Oda ends up doing with her. However, no fan would be against the idea of her accompanying Luffy on the way to the Final Island.

One Piece is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus app. The release date for the next chapter of One Piece, One Piece 1101, is set to be December 10, 2023.
